Search strategy

We search the PubMed (, other bibliographic databases (e.g. OVID, Ingenta, Synergy-Blackwell, Proquest,ScienceDirect) and search engine (Google Scholar, for medical journals originating from Malaysia. Weinclude the journal if it is (1) published by a professional body or institution in Malaysia, (2) currently actively publishing, and (3)has a searchable website or indexed by major databases.

Malaysia and primary care presence

Our search identified 13 journals satisfying our inclusion criteria. We excluded 22 print journals; many of these have ceasedpublication (see below). The web presence of these included journals allows readers to access the abstracts via (for the indexedjournals) and free full texts via the journal websites. For the period 2000-2007 (accessed date 21st April 2007), these journalspublished almost 2000 papers originating from Malaysia. Although most of the articles in these journals were written by Malaysians, two of them have a more regional focus: Asia Pac J Public Health and Neurology Asia. The number of primary care researchpapers in these journals is still rather limited – possibly this reflects the low level of research activity in our discipline rather thereluctance of these journals to publish them.
